Spring is in the Air.... finally!

Hey!  It's been a while since I updated-- things are going great though!

Little man is now 16 months old.  Little turd STILL isn't walking on his own.  He certainly zips around crawling and cruising (holding onto furniture and pushing his push toys).  He's saying more words now... he has added the word "car" to his vocabulary and will try and repeat us sometimes.  He's also working on his molars still, He's got one top one most of the way through, the other top one is barely through, and the bottom two I can feel but haven't actually broken through yet.  Fun times!

MWAH!!!!
Blowing Kisses!

We haven't been successful in our night weaning attempts so far.  We decided to put it on hold for a bit, and thankfully he HAS gotten a little better.  There for a while it was getting ridiculous.  Now he typically nurses in the very early hours of the morning (like 4-5ish) and goes back to sleep till around 7 when he's up for the day.  Then most days he will go the entire day and not want to nurse again till bedtime, then once between 10-12 when he comes in our bed.  Some days are worse but I can handle the good nights.  I think we are just going to have to get him sleeping in his own room all night for it to really work for him.

Duke & Jackson watching the snow melt!
The winter weather has FINALLY broken.  I REALLY hope that snow is in the past until next winter.  I normally like snow but after this winter I'm officially OVER it and ready for Spring!  We've been able to get Jackson outside quite a bit the last few weeks and he loves it!

Got to try out his wagon he got for Christmas!

Still LOVES to swing!

LOVE!

Yesterday was my birthday--  The big 2-8!  Gosh it feels so crazy to be almost 30!  Not that 30 is old really, but I guess in my head I still think of myself being in my early 20s.  Not anymore!  I had a good day yesterday.  Today we are going out with my parents and one of my brothers to celebrate!  (my other brother & his fam are out of town)  Red Lobster here I come.  YUM!

Jackson enjoying some Qdoba queso dip!  We got takeout per my request from there last night.  LOVE Qdoba!

Some other fun exciting things-- we are blessed to be getting an awesome tax refund this year, it should be here sometime next week (yay!)  With it we will have enough money to finish our emergency fund, pay off all three medical bills from Jackson's birth, AND one of our credit cards!  (woot woot!)  We also have allotted ourselves some "spending money" from it, so I'm looking forward to doing a bit of shopping and getting a much needed haircut!

YAY!  We still have a long way to go-- but it's a relief to finally be making some progress!

Oh and I am doing VEDA (Video Every Day in April) for the first time over on my YouTube channel... so go check it out! :)

Alright that's all for now-- I'm hoping to do some Spring/Easter pics of Jackson soon (as soon as I get his Easter outfit!) so look for a post with those very soon!

Bye!

Reflecting on 2013 and looking to 2014...

I can't believe 2013 is almost over...

This was the first year that I was "mommy" the whole year.  Last new year's Jackson was just 6 weeks old, and throughout the year I've enjoyed watching him grow and learn- hitting his milestones and developing his little personality.

New Year's Day 2013- and 6 weeks old!

We celebrated Jackson's "first" holidays of Valentine's Day, Easter, 4th of July, and Halloween.  We went on our first family vacation as a family of three (with my parents and brother also) to the beach.  And I planned for and we celebrated Jackson's first birthday!

Halloween 2013
Those are just some of the highlights-- we had a couple "bumps" this year, first of all being that our bad financial decisions caught up with us!  We had to make some big cuts and learn how to budget our money better.  We are still learning but things are looking better.  We also muddled our way through our first year of parenthood and came out on the other side no worse for the wear!

My little goofball just before his first birthday

This year I do have a few "resolutions" (or goals) for the next year.  I split them into a few different categories, and I hope that I can stick to them- at least I'm going to try as hard as I can!

Personal

  • Pray more - use my notes on my iphone to keep my prayers organzied but I do need to do this more often!
  • Read more- it's been soooo long since I've been able to start and finish a book that I just wanted to read for fun.  I'm talking since before Jackson was born, maybe even before I was pregnant!  I have several ebooks on my Kindle I haven't read yet so I want to get into those.  I also want to read the bible more as well.
  • Be more disciplined about picking up after myself/cleaning house-  Seriously I'm horrible at this.  Here's what happens as far as my household chores go... I let them slide, I only do the bare minimum on a daily basis, then I'm left with an entire day packed full of cleaning... as in 6 loads of laundry, clean clothes piled up, dishes overtaking the sink, clutter on the floor, countertops covered, etc.  I know if I just MAKE myself put things away when I'm done with them, that I'll have half as much cleaning to do when I do "deep clean".  This is going to be a hard one for me but I'm trying to make it a goal to load the dishwasher, pick up Jackson's toys, and work on something laundry related (whether it's washing/drying a load or putting clothes away) every day.

Family

  • Spend more time alone with my husband- we have been on TWO dates since I had Jackson.  That's two times we went out and did something together without him.  Usually if we go out to eat or something we just bring him because he is such a good baby going out and such and it's easier than getting a babysitter.  But as much as we love our little guy I know it's important for us to get time with just each other.  So I'm setting a goal to have at least one "date night/day" a month.  I know financially we will have to have several date nights in but instead of putting Jackson to bed and doing our own thing (which is what we usually do, and nothing wrong with that- we both enjoy our "me" time too) but on a date night in we will have a late dinner together, play a card game, or SOMETHING to just talk and reconnect.
  • Sleep train Jackson-  As of now and pretty much since he was 5 months old Jackson sleeps anywhere from 2-5 hours in his crib until he first wakes, then he sleeps the rest of the night with us.  It really has worked out well, we all get enough sleep this way and Jackson has never had to "cry it out" as it has been often suggested to me that he does.  It hasn't hurt our marriage or "alone" time or any of that-- basically this arrangement works and has been working so we haven't been motivated to change it.  BUT sometime this year we hope to conceive baby #2 and two things I would like to happen before I get pregnant (or as close to as possible) is that I would like Jackson to be weaned and sleeping in his own room all night.  It won't be good for his sleep if he's in bed with us with a newborn waking up every two hours and I also don't think that tandem nursing is for me.  Jackson has cut down on frequency of breastfeeding so I don't think weaning will be a problem.  As for sleeping in his room all night, I know that it is probably going to involve a good deal of crying at first but I am ok with that now that he is older.  I believe he understands that we aren't abandoning him or anything.  And he is ABLE to fall asleep on his own at the beginning of the night, so I know he CAN put himself back to sleep too.  I'm not necessarily going to night wean, at least right away, but I think if I can get him sleeping in his room through the night that he will naturally night wean.  He only nurses at night now because he falls asleep fastest like that (so for comfort) and because for the second half of the night I'm right there and he has easy access.  We have been putting it off for a while now because of my own laziness.  It's just EASIER to get him, nurse him, and have him in our bed the rest of the night.  I'm setting a "deadline" though for myself to start this process before he turns 18mo.  So by May 1 we need to get this ball rolling (if not before!)
  • Stop preventing pregnancy-  Sometime this year :)

Financial

  • Get our emergency fund together (and check off that first Baby Step!)
  • Start our debt snowball (this will be possible after we get our tax return)
  • Sell one of our vehicles- things have worked out so that we CAN still keep the Jeep and save some money each month, that said we technically have three cars right now (though one is still being worked on) so we obviously don't need three.  We are hoping to either sell the Jeep and get out of the payment OR sell our other car and use the cash for our debt snowball.  We will probably list both here in another month or so and see what goes quickest!
  • Pray about my job situation-  I am going to be applying for full time teaching positions this year again.  We are also considering me possibly going back to subbing (as much as I HATE to) because I was making more money subbing than I am teaching preschool right now.  So I don't have any specific goals here but I wanted to spend more time praying about it- praying that if it's God's will that I will get a contracted position (which even though I'd rather not work full time it would be a huge financial blessing to us and we would be able to get out of debt MUCH faster), and if not then that I am able to make the right call as to whether I should go back to subbing or continue teaching where I am now.

Whew! ok yeah so that is quite a bit but hopefully it's not too much!  As always I'll keep updating on everything on here! :)

Happy New Year everyone!!!

Journey to Debt-Free! -- Intro

Ok so I'm thinking of doing a new blog "series" just documenting our family's journey to becoming debt free and learning to really manage our money.  I'm not sure if I'm going to vlog any of it on my YouTube channel or not... I'll  have to give that some further thought.

Anyway, so this post is just an introduction to our journey and how we got ourselves in this sticky situation in the first place!

First of all, neither of our parents ever really TAUGHT us how to manage money.  Not because they didn't want to-- but because they probably had (have?) no clue themselves.  Both of our parents still carry several debts and the like.  I'm not criticizing their money management though because at the moment they both are paying their bills and have enough left to help us out (a lot).  But my point is that growing up we never really learned the importance of saving, and we learned several myths out there (that you HAVE to have credit, etc.).  When Brew & I got married we had both been working for some time.  I had worked in child care and then at the YMCA (both minimum wage jobs) but then upon graduating college I had worked a year as a substitute teacher while still living at home.  My husband was a part time college student and worked full time at first a tractor trailer manufacturing plant and then an auto parts store (more than min wage but not much more).  We both still lived at home, and we each had a small auto loan and credit card.  So most of the money we made we spent (albeit not always frivolously- I and the Promise Scholarship funded my entire college education for one).  I did have a modest savings account (a few thousand dollars), but my husband had ZERO savings.  We got married in 2010 and we were doing pretty good.  We used a portion of my savings to pay for our wedding (what my parents didn't help with) and honeymoon.  We were living rent-free (basically) and my husband had just gotten his better paying job at the medical supply company where he works now and I was subbing allll the time.  Brew was working LOTS of overtime and like I said I was working a lot too, usually 3-5 days a week and I had several long terms the first couple years of our marriage.  But we were stupid.  We made enough to pay our bills, eat, and have a little fun with-- so we did.  We went to 1-2 WVU games a year, we ate out allll the time, we bought an 18,000 Jeep, etc.  But dumb us didn't save much if any.  We did save a little and then we decided to buy a house and used the reminder of our savings for closing costs.

After we bought our house we were still doing ok with the new mortgage payment.  We had a little less play money but we made it work, we even had enough to purchase cable/DVR.  Still we spent (or gave) all of what we made though, and had little to no savings.

Then in 2012 I (finally) got pregnant!  We knew that after I had the baby I wouldn't get paid for my maternity leave so we did start saving some then.  At the time all of our bills were paid completely by Brew's paychecks and my paychecks were our fun money.  (yeah, that was the extent of the "budget"), so I started saving a portion of my paychecks throughout my pregnancy and figured if we had enough for two months of what I normally got paid that we would be fine.

Well in late summer of 2012 things changed a bit.  First of all, my husbands company hired a fourth driver AND cut OT almost simultaneously.  That meant that he was bringing home about $200-300 less each paycheck (around $500/month less!!!).  Ouch.  And then I had Jackson and obviously couldn't work for eight weeks (I was 6 weeks postpartum the week of Christmas so there was no school anyway).  Needless to say we blew through what we had saved in no time because we had to use our savings to pay bills AND buy gas, groceries, and any sort of fun thing we might do.  So since we went through all our savings we then had to start using credit cards to pay for groceries, gas, etc. AND even bills a few times.  So as you can imagine-- we racked up the credit card debt pretty darned fast.  To top it off- we now had lots of medical bills too (what the insurance didn't cover of Brew's sleep study he had done around the time we got pregnant, and then of course all the costs of labor/delivery, prenatal care, and our hospital stay).  So we went from having lots of "extra" money to play with to literally living paycheck to paycheck, never having any "fun money", barely buying groceries, and trying to figure out who didn't get paid this month cause it just wasn't there.

My cousins introduced us to Dave Ramsay's Financial Peace program.  We watched the DVDs and felt like THIS was what we needed.  This was our only way out that we could see.

The first thing we had to do was quit "living in the red" (meaning negative numbers!  we were spending more than we were bringing in!).  We stopped eating out almost entirely.  We cut our cable.  We sold my husbands drum set and used our tax return to pay off some of the smaller medical bills we had.  And most importantly we learned how to budget (well we are still learning), and started using his envelope system.  (Future blog post on budgeting and how we do it coming soon!).

Now we have our budget figured out somewhat-- we are no longer spending more than we make-- but we don't have enough to save to start the Baby Steps.  So we have to do something "drastic".  We are trying now to sell our Jeep.  My parents gave us a... well "fixer uper" puts it nicely... anyway so my parents gave us that so my husband can drive it to work and then we also have the car that we already own to use as our main vehicle.  Once we can get the Jeep sold I'm confident we can get moving on this...

So come along with us for the ride!  I'm definitely going to share it all-- in hopes that maybe I can help someone else out there in the same situation!
